Apart from this story's taking place on the Blood Sea, there's nothing connecting it to the other stories or characters we've seen so far in the (publication) order, so it was a little tough to get into. (Unless the wreckage they found was from the ship in Book III of the first trilogy; I can't remember.)

The plaque they found bore the name Perechon which was indeed the same ship that Berem, Tanis, and the others sank in.
